Van Security

Security on modern new vans is way better than in the past. Most models include immobilisers and good quality door locks as standard and solid rear doors and full height bulkheads as options as well as concealed storage areas and central locking. However, you can never be too secure so you may want to make the potential thief’s job even harder.

Physical Deterrents

Windows in rear doors can be protected with clear or tinted laminate or punched steel grilles. Plastic roof extensions can be lined with wire mesh and full height bulkheads can create a safe cell.

Security Locks

Electronic locks can be mounted on the inside of loading doors, you can add high security armoured barrels and if you make a lot of deliveries you could consider slamlocks which with a quarter turn of the key automatically lock the door the next time you shut it. Deadlocks can only be opened with a key, stopping thieves from opening the doors by jiggling the lock’s internal mechanism. Systems which automatically lock all doors ten seconds after you’ve left the van are also available.

Items on the Roof

If you carry items such as ladders on the roof then they can be secured with padlocks. If you regularly transport items such as copper tubes which are too long to fit inside the van then a pipe tube with lockable caps at each end can prove to be a wise investment (don’t forget to lock the tube to the roof rack!).

Alarms

Alarms can be triggered by a variety of sensors – contact switches for doors, ultrasonic detectors for windows and even passive infrared sensors which pick up a thief’s bodyheat! The type you need will depend on your van, your cargo and your budget so it’s best to discuss options with your sales advisor.

Immobilisers

An immobiliser disables a variety of functions – electronic diesel control, starter motor, fuel system, handbrake and so on - so the van won’t move. Most new vans have an immobiliser as standard but if yours doesn’t then you should consider fitting one. Sophisticated models which set themselves automatically and can be integrated with a panic alarm cost about £350.

Trackers

Tracking device help police in recovery of stolen vehicles and can also help keep your insurance premiums down! Trackers send a silent signal so a thief won’t know he is being tracked until it’s too late. Prices vary between £300 and £700 depending on the system’s sophistication and once it is installed you need to budget about £120 per annum for a subscription to the tracking company.

Identification

If your van stands out then it’s less likely to be nicked. Odd strong paint colours affect a van’s second hand value so how about distinctive sign writing or even wrapping your van in vinyl – you can easily remove it when you want to sell it. A note of caution – consider what you have sign written so as not to advertise to the world that you are carrying valuables.
